Careers
Why should I entrust my career with Custom House?
Although Custom House has no vacancies at this time, when we do, we look for intelligent, inquisitive candidates, who have attention to detail, are keen to learn and are ambitious. We operate a team culture, with teams consisting of administrators, overseen by team leaders, supervisors, deputy manager and, untimately, the department manager. Our preference is to promote, from within, those who have performed well and have shown both good inter-personal skills and commitment.
Custom House prides itself on its personal service and thus all candidates should be willing, and indeed interested, in personal interaction with clients.
In addition to internal and external training programmes concentrating on Custom House's area of expertise, we also offer development programmes aimed at improving such skills as interpersonal, communication and, as you climb the promotion ladder, management skills.
We encourage and support active continuation of education programmes - indeed, many of our staff have taken the ACCA (Association of Certified and Chartered Accountants) courses, whilst working with us. We give financial support and study leave. Other courses leading to qualifications that are relevant to a career in financial services are also encouraged and supported.
Climbing the career ladder does exist within our culture. As you will see from the case studies shown, it really happens!
Case Study 1
Scott Price, Manager, Chicago Office
Before I joined Custom House's Chicago Office ("Custom House"), I worked in London at an accounting practice specialising in UK taxation, audit and financial statement preparations. Hoping to find excitement outside of tax and in conjunction with my permanent move overseas, I joined Custom House's newly formed Chicago office.
Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a small, but friendly, group of staff that had built tremendous camaraderie in such a short timeframe. I was eager to apply my accounting experience while gaining key knowledge about the hedge fund administration business. I was able to learn while contributing to the growth of the firm and, over time, was fortunate enough to experience professional growth. Our once small office was rapidly developing into a key business center within the group and now has over 55 professionals servicing clients across the globe.
Currently, I am the manager of the Chicago office. Every day I oversee all aspects of operations in Chicago that include fund administration, shareholder servicing, portfolio reconciliation, office management and IT. As a manager, I try to foresee all potential issues that might arise and arrange solutions to meet those issues in order to meet all the firm's ongoing and future needs and provide an efficient ongoing service to our clients.
Overall, Custom House has been the place where I was able to broaden my horizons, increase my depth of knowledge, hone my business acumen and, most importantly, strengthen my character. It is true that our business depends on our people and, on that basis, I am able to confirm that Custom House has a strong business.
Case Study 2
Rhys Maber, Manager, Singapore Office
I joined Custom House in April 2002 as a temporary employee after emigrating to Ireland. My contract was for two weeks and I had little knowledge of the alternative funds industry. The company, which was relatively small at the time, offered me a position in the Shareholder Services department that entailed liaising between investment managers and shareholders after my contract expired. Having a keen interest in the finance industry, I accepted the role.
My knowledge of the alternative funds industry and systems grew quickly through the support of colleagues, on-the-job training and external training courses provided by Custom House. The growth of the industry and company policy of "promoting within" helped facilitate an excellent career path for employees. The transformation of Custom House into a truly global organisation soon presented employees with work opportunities in different jurisdictions around the world. In May 2008, I was offered the opportunity of establishing and managing the Shareholder Services department in the Singapore office - one that I gratefully accepted and today continue to embrace the challenge of this role.
A career with Custom House, does it happen...?
You will see within a short timeframe an established culture, which encourages and creates interesting and fulfilling opportunities for those who are looking to fulfill their qualification base. Positions are available which take account of your skills gained probably within finance related subjects, preferably with accounting skills. Additional language skills would also be a bonus, particularly in Russian, most Western Europe and Scandinavian, as well as Easter European, languages. We also look for Chinese speakers and Custom House's Dublin staff alone, between them, speak over a dozen languages.
Not only do we have opportunities for those candidates with finance qualifications, our Corporate Services, Fund Formation, IT and Accounts departments would all welcome graduates with the relevant qualification.
I want to broaden my horizons...
Our presence in Malta, Dublin, Luxembourg, Chicago and Singapore creates opportunities for you to travel to new places, work in different countries around the globe and experience different cultures.
